About our partner

SUN CSA Kenya coordinates non-state actors working on nutrition across Kenya. At the time of our August 2026 visit it had 441 registered member organisations across all 47 counties, with coordinated activities running in 20 counties, mostly in the Coastal and Central Rift Valley regions. The alliance works with SUN Movement structures, government ministries, Youth-SUN, academia, Biz-SUN (led by GAIN), donors and UNICEF, and is overseen by an 11-member Board of Directors.

Peer learning mission, 21–27 August 2026

A five-member CS-SUNN team spent a week with SUN CSA Kenya: at the national Secretariat in Nairobi, with county member organisations in Mombasa and Kwale, and on two nutrition-sensitive farm projects. The aim was a direct exchange on alliance governance, financial sustainability, member coordination, advocacy and nutrition-sensitive agriculture.

What came out of the mission

  • A path to financial sustainability. CS-SUNN shared its membership dues model, which verifies active members, builds ownership and funds the Secretariat. SUN CSA Kenya agreed to put a dues proposal to its next Annual General Meeting.
  • Practical advice for a community farm. At a women-led dairy and vegetable farm, the team found gaps in feasibility planning, extension support and veterinary care, and recommended linking the project with county agricultural extension officers before restocking.
  • Biofortified crops for a youth institution. CS-SUNN connected the model farm at the Shimo la Tewa Borstal Institution with HarvestPlus for Vitamin A maize, orange-fleshed sweet potato and Vitamin A cassava, and gave US$150 towards quality planting materials.
  • A stronger county chapter. In Kwale, the County Nutrition Officer committed to bring the newly inaugurated SUN CSA Kwale chapter into local nutrition planning and technical working groups.
