Beneficiaries of CS-SUNN’s on-going capacity building workshop for Civil Society Alliances (CSAs) in some states in Nigeria on Proposal Writing/Resource Mobilization have lauded the initiative describing it as an innovative approach that will position CS-SUNN state chapters to effectively mobilize resources for implementation of nutrition interventions.

“The capacity building of members of the Lagos state chapter of CS-SUNN has met 90% of the participants expectations. The facilitators are skillful and highly resourceful. The training environment is very good and arrangement is perfect. We look forward to being expert proposal persons and CS-SUNN being able to mobilize resources effectively for our activities after the training” says Hon. Aladayelu, Executive Director, HAGAI.

“The capacity building on Proposal Writing/Resource Mobilization for sustainability has been inspiring and innovative. The methodologies deployed are awesome – giving every participant ownership. I am glad to be in the class”, added Ebere Okey – Onyema the Executive Director of HELWEI. In her words, Dr. Modupe Akinyinka CS-SUNN Lagos State Chapter Coordinator said “Eye opening on multiple sources of funding for the chapter and our readiness to access funds”.

In her words, Odey Unyi Christiana from Community Aid Initiative for Empowerment and Good Leadership in Niger state says “At the initial my ideas on resource mobilization are limited but now I have a broadened knowledge on the topic”.  Another participant from Child-to-Child Initiative in Niger state Ikyapa Verlumun Philip said “I have learnt how to conceptualize fundraising process which I intend to deploy going forward in my organization”.

These aforementioned participants are part of representatives from various organizations including Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN), Professional Association of Public Health Nursing Officers of Nigeria (PAPHNON), Media Coalition Against Malnutrition (MECaM) (all members of the CS-SUNN Lagos and Niger State Chapters) who have just concluded a week-long training on Proposal Writing/  Resource Mobilization in Lagos and Niger states respectively.

The training, in Lagos state was held from the 17th – 21st of January 2022 and in Kano from 24th-28th of January 2022. Participants were trained on resource mobilization, funding and sustainability of CS-SUNN state chapters.

The objectives of the training are to:

ensure sustainability of the coalition and reduced dependency on the national office.

Strengthen CS-SUNN Lagos/Niger State Chapters on proposal writing and resource mobilization.

support Lagos/Niger state chapters to develop a fundable plan (that aligns with the PINNS 2.0 project), implement the plan and report regularly as part of their programmatic contribution to attaining PINNS 2.0 objectives.

Prior to this resource mobilization workshop, CS-SUNN state chapters have been mostly dependent on the national office for funding to implement state specific activities and have in other cases annulled such activities where funding was unavailable.   CS-SUNN has a mission to mobilize non-state actors to advocate, build capacity, and generate evidence towards scaling up nutrition in Nigeria. Moreover, to achieve the above, it is paramount that the CSAs are strengthened at all levels to optimally function and implement nutrition interventions. It is therefore expected that at the end of the training, the CS-SUNN state chapters will become empowered with skills and capacity to write grant winning proposals, positioning them to mobilize and secure funds for the implementation of nutrition interventions in their various States. The training will be replicated in Nasarawa, Kano and Kaduna states.
