Amina’s Tale: Advocating Rights, Equality, and Empowerment for All Women and Girls

Across Nigeria, women are breaking barriers, pushing beyond limitations, and defying societal norms to create better lives for themselves and their families. This 2025 International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month recalls the need to celebrate the resilience of women like Amina, who despite the odds, continue to fight for their rights, equality, economic empowerment, and access to nutrition and healthcare.

Amina Bello, a mother of three, wakes before sunrise to work—washing clothes, pounding millet, and sweeping compounds. “Very early, every morning I am already awake. They say I should stay home, cook, and care for my children. But hunger does not listen to tradition, and poverty does not care if I am a woman. I trek from house to house, washing clothes, pounding millet, sweeping compounds—anything to earn a little money or food for my children”, says Amina. Some say I bring shame to my husband. I say I bring survival to my family.

At the back of my house, I grow tomatoes, groundnuts, and vegetables—They nourish my children, give them strength, and bring hope. But even these small efforts come with challenges. The land is dry, the rains are unpredictable, and there are days when we go to bed with empty stomachs. I dream of a day when my children will not know hunger. “I dream of a future where I own a small business, where my girls can go to school without fear of being pulled out to help with housework”, she added.

Amina’s story mirrors the experiences of countless other Nigerian women and embody the spirit of this year’s International Women’s Day theme: For ALL Women and Girls. Rights. Equality. Empowerment. Investing in economic opportunities for women is vital. Enhancing their access to income-generating activities and financial services is crucial for economic empowerment and poverty alleviation. By providing women with the tools and resources they need to succeed, we can unlock their full potential and create a brighter future for themselves and their families.

As we reflect on the story of Amina and other women who have overcome incredible obstacles to achieve their goals, we are reminded that progress is possible and that continuous efforts are required to ensure that every woman and girl can exercise her fundamental rights, access equal opportunities, and make informed decisions. By championing these causes, we move closer to achieving Sustainable Development Goals 2 (Zero Hunger) and 5 (Gender Equality), paving the way for a more equitable and nourished Nigeria.
