SUN CSYNN Volunteer State Team Leads

Position: Volunteer State Team Leads

Bauchi, Cross-River, Enugu, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Oyo States

The Scaling Up Nutrition Civil Society Youth Network Nigeria under the Youth Leaders for Nutrition Program of the Scaling Up Nutrition Civil Society Network (SUN CSN) is mobilizing a new generation of Youth Activists to build powerful movements of young people working to end malnutrition and ensure Nutrition and Food Security.

At the state level, two (2) youth activists will be selected to serve as team leads to coordinate Youth Network Activities in their state. They will work together with the National Youth Coordinator (NYC) and the State Chapters of the Civil Society Scaling up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) to identify and mobilize other youth activists to form a united movement of young people advocating for the importance of nutrition in their various communities.

With your newly unified network of youth activists, you would work together to identify the biggest issues affecting access to good nutrition and agree on joint innovative strategies for tackling them.

Community-led change

Children and young people at the grassroots level have a unique understanding of food insecurity and malnutrition affecting their communities. This also makes them best placed to lead any efforts to tackle these issues.

As a Team Lead, we want you to reach out to these young people and collectively demand change from your local decision-makers to improve nutrition in your communities.

Together with your network of youth activists, you will be supported by the National Youth Coordination (NYC) and CS-SUNN, to identify decision-makers and inspire them to listen to your demands and join your campaign to end malnutrition and ensure access to food and nutrition.

Do you have what it takes?

To be successful in this role you do not need to be an expert in nutrition or in political affairs. The National Youth Coordinator as well as CS-SUNN will provide Team leads and the Youth Network Members with the necessary training and education to better understand your roles, support you to identify the challenges affecting access to nutrition today, and help you make a positive change.

We are looking for young people aged 18-30 who believe in the power of communities and understand how to bring young people together to deliver change.

Here are some more specific qualities we are looking for in State Team Leads:

  • Proven enthusiasm and commitment to leading a group of young people to deliver change
  • A demonstrable passion for human, youth, and child rights
  • A proven commitment to ensuring access to good nutrition for all
  • An ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences
  • A commitment to listen to and include the voices of those who are often excluded
  • Self-motivation and an ability to establish, and meet, your own deadlines
  • A commitment to regularly sharing progress updates with your peers and with colleagues supporting you.

Our SUN Civil Society Youth Network Nigeria is committed to representing the widest range of young voices in our movement. For this reason, we strongly encourage applications from young people who:

  • Have experience of being displaced (either internally or as refugees)
  • Identify as indigenous or an ethnic minority within your state.
  • Have or are currently experiencing extreme poverty, food insecurity, or malnutrition
  • Live with disabilities
  • Speak English and the state’s local dialect.

At present, we are only able to accept applications for the position of Team Leads from young people in Bauchi, Cross-River, Enugu, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Oyo States, selected across the six-geopolitical zones of the country.

What you will get from this role

This role is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop your skills as a movement-builder, community-organiser, and nutrition advocate. By joining the Civil Society Scaling up Nutrition in Nigeria as a SUN Civil Society Youth Network State Team Lead, you will be part of a renowned coalition of civil society organizations, all united in the mission to end malnutrition for all. You will have the opportunity to connect and collaborate with these partners in your state and in the country.

If successful in your application, we will invite you to join us and other State Team Leads from all around the country for a couple of virtual meetings where you will have the chance to connect with other inspiring young people and receive in-depth training to provide you with the skills and understanding you need to start working with the NYC to building your state network of youth activists.

Once the youth activists (network members) are mobilized, The National Youth Coordinator shall organize a physical retreat/workshop for the network members in your state. During this meeting, the NYC as well as the State Chapter of CS-SUNN will support the network members (Youth Nutrition Activists) to develop a workplan to guide their activities, campaigns and advocacies.
